Parking, street closures to occur in Downtown Columbia during concert

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Parking was restricted Thursday in part of Downtown Columbia in preparation for a street concert near the University of Missouri campus.

Sixth Street was closed from Cherry to Locust starting at 7 a.m. Thursday. The closure will last through 7 a.m. Friday, according to City Council documents, to accommodate My House Blockfest.

Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal will headline the "Shaq's Bass All-Stars" event.

At last check, all tickets but VIP were sold out.

The concert will be held on Sixth and Cherry starting at 6 p.m. The event is expected to last until 11 p.m. with an estimated attendance of 3,000.

The alley between My House and Columbia College will remain open for foot traffic but closed for the general public.

The Sixth and Cherry parking garage will remain open until one hour before the concert.

Increased security at event

Several agencies will be patrolling to ensure everyone's safety.

"We have paid off-duty police officers to man this parking garage and just walk around the whole area. We have a private security team from St. Louis that's focused around the stage in particular but more crowd control and then we have our own staff of about 35 security members on site," said My House owner, Dan Rader.

The State Historical Society voiced concerns over the outdoor concerts last year including barricades in a parking garage before employees could leave the business,, and porta-potties placed in their parking lot.
