Mizzou Football Star collaborates with Second Baptist Church to giveaway school supplies to the community
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Many families struggle to prepare for back-to-school shopping as the prices for supplies have increased within the last year, but one Mizzou football player is trying to help.
Families of K-12 students are expected to spend nearly $900 on back-to-school items, a new record high compared to almost $865 families spent last year, according to the National Retail Federation.
Mizzou Football Star Darius Robinson teamed up with Second Missionary Baptist Church to give away school supplies for children. This opportunity releases a financial burden on families. The drive starts at 5 p.m. outside of the Second Missionary Baptist Church.
The cost of school supplies has risen 23.7% since 2020, according to the professional services firm Deloitte.
"We have a budget that we do every year, and we just try to figure out what we want to do for the year. How many people will come out, and so we use that budget to purchase these items in order to give back to the community," said Trina Boone, youth and young adult pastor at Second Baptist Church.
Donations from the community, the church and Robinson add up to around 150 backpacks full of supplies for the drive.
If you miss out on Saturday, several other drives will be open to the community in the next couple of weeks.
- Thursday, Aug. 17, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at MU Health Pavilion, 1769 W. Ash Street, Columbia. Hosted by the Powerhouse Community Development Corporation
- Saturday, Aug. 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lange Middle School. Hosted by R.I.S.E
- Sunday, Aug. 20, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Oakland Park. Hosted by Renz Blend.
