A man charged with first-degree murder for a 2020 shooting in Columbia's Douglass Park pleaded guilty to a reduced charge Monday.

Rickey Lee Murry pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge during a pretrial hearing. Sentencing is set for Sept. 8. Murry also pleaded guilty to armed criminal action and illegal gun possession.

The defense and prosecutors reached the deal on Friday ahead of this week's scheduled trial.

Murry was accused in the shooting that killed Corey Jordan in August 2020. Police were called to Douglass Park at the time for a report of shots fired.

Jordan's mother told the court she was happy that Murry admitted his bad actions.

Police previously said around 100 people were around the area, some applying pressure to Jordan's wounds. Jordan was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

A witness told police at the time that Murry was "creeping around and hiding behind trees and vehicles" before getting into a confrontation with Jordan and shooting him, according to a probable cause statement.
