Cardinal bats miss opportunities in series loss to the Rockies
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)
The St. Louis Cardinals barreled up eight hits on Sunday afternoon, however, the club went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, leading to a 1-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies. The defeat also resulted in a series loss for STL.
Former Cardinal pitcher Austin Gomber turned out to be the story of the game for the Rockies. He pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning against his former team. It was one of the many missed opportunities that the Cardinals faced, as the group stranded a season-high 15 base runners overall.
Gomber gave up just six hits and punched out two batters. He escaped that jam by forcing Tyler O'Niell to hit a groundout in the fifth inning.
It was a bad-luck loss for St. Louis pitcher Zack Thompson. He tossed for four innings with eight strikeouts and just two hits allowed. The bullpen held up, as well, as the only Colorado run that came home was courtesy of a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
The Cardinals have now lost four out of the club's last six games.
Up next - St. Louis will travel to Tampa Bay to take on the third-best team in baseball. The birds and the Rays will throw out the first pitch at 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8.
