Chiefs kick off training camp without veteran Chris Jones on the field

ST. JOESPH, Mo. (KMIZ)

Kansas City Chiefs training camp kicked off at Missouri Western on Sunday and defensive tackle Chris Jones did not take the field with the rest of the team.

According to head coach Andy Reid, Jones and the Chiefs are "in communication" to reach an agreement on a new contract.

Jones has one year left on the four-year, $80 million contract that he signed in 2020. This deal made him the ninth-highest-paid defensive tackle in the league.

"There has been communication, we'll see where it goes from here," Reid said. "If you're not here, we just we just keep moving and that's how that's how we roll, we don't worry a lot about that, we let it take care of itself."

Jones tied his career high last season with 15.5 sacks, which ranked fourth in the league and first among interior pass-rushers.

"We love Chris and when he decides to report, we'll welcome," said Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt. "I don't want to get into speculating on when that will happen or if it will happen."

Every day that Jones is not at Chiefs training camp, he will be fined $50,000.
