JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Jefferson City man has been charged with first-degree burglary after allegedly entering a residence Saturday in the 300 block of Landwehr Hills Road.

Michael Scott Sayles, 46, is being held in the Cole County Jail without bond. An arraignment was held Monday and a bond review hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 24 at the Cole County Circuit Court.

Sayles allegedly walked into a carport around 1 a.m. Saturday, grabbed a lighter and looked around the carport before entering a house, according to the probable cause statement. Police say in the statement that footage from a Ring camera showed him enter the house. Sayles then eventually left the property.

A Monday press release from the Jefferson City Police Department states several items were stolen from the home.

Sayles was seen on another Ring camera attempting to open a door that was locked at another residence, according to the probable cause statement. Police used a records search to look up Sayles’ address and talked with him.

Sayles allegedly denied the events but told police that he “didn’t mean to go in there,” when showed the video footage, the probable cause statement says.

The probable cause statement says Sayles has a “lengthy history” involving theft.

Sayles pleaded guilty on May 9 to two counts of second-degree tampering with a motor vehicle and attempted stealing. He was sentenced to two years of unsupervised probation with a suspended sentence of 120 days. He was also charged with stealing in May and has a counsel status hearing set for 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25.
