CHICAGO, Ill. (KMIZ)

The St. Louis Cardinals will head into the All-Star break with some much-needed momentum, following a 4-3, extra innings win against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon. The victory secured the series win for the birds, 2-1.

STL had a one-run lead headed into the bottom of the seventh inning, courtesy of a stellar day from starting pitcher Steven Matz. He tossed for a little more than five innings with nine strikeouts and no runs allowed on two hits.

However, once Matz exited the game, the White Sox bats got going. St. Louis' third error of the day brought the tying run in for Chicago in the seventh inning. In the eighth, Zach Remillard scored to his club a one-run lead.

Thankfully for St. Louis fans, the Cardinals offense saved the day, as the group tied it up in the ninth and Paul DeJong hit the game-winning RBI double in the 10th.

On the hill, JoJo Romero earned the win thanks to pitching no-hit, shutout baseball in the final two innings. He also tallied three strikeouts.

The dramatic win on Sunday brings the first half of the 2023 season to a close. The Cardinals finished 37-52 overall and still sit dead last in the central division of the National League. The Cincinnati Reds are in first place with a 50-41 record through the first half of the year. The red birds are 11.5 games back from that first place club, which means the group will have to turn it on for the second half of the season.
