Mid-Missouri cities cancel fireworks displays
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A number of municipalities in the Mid-Missouri area are canceling or postponing their Independence Day fireworks displays as intense heat and drought conditions continue to hammer the area.
The City of Centralia said Thursday that it is canceling its July 1 fireworks display because of dry conditions. It will be rescheduled, the city says.
The Boonville Area Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday announced on its Facebook page that its July 4 fireworks show at the Cooper County Fairgrounds has been called off, but it’s possible that it could be rescheduled for another date.
The City of Rosebud rescheduled its Fourth of July fireworks show to Saturday, Sept. 2 due to safety concerns from the drought.
Eldon’s City Clerk said in an email that it will not hold its fireworks display due to health and safety concerns, but other events will continue.
“Due to the concern of public safety and health, the City of Eldon has decided not to proceed with the fireworks display for the 4th of July,” City Clerk Leslie Wilson said in the email. “We will be continuing the 5k in the morning. The 4th of July parade and free swim at the Eldon Aquatic Center from 12 noon until 4 P.M. There has not been any decision made at this time if the fireworks will be held a different night. Thank you for your continued support of the City of Eldon.”
The City of Bunceton is canceling its fireworks shows and is prohibiting the use of fireworks in the city due to current conditions. Other scheduled activities will go on as planned, the City wrote on Facebook.
A number of areas have introduced burn bans and fire advisories, as well. Fulton announced a burn ban, but residents can still shoot off fireworks between 1-11 p.m. July 3-5.
Other areas are still planning on including fireworks for their Independence Day celebrations.
Columbia's Fire in the Sky event will start at 6:30 p.m. at Stephens Lake Park, with fireworks beginning at 9:15 p.m. Jefferson City's Salute to America festival took to its Facebook page to say fireworks would still be happening.
Holts Summit will hold its annual fireworks show 5 p.m. Friday.
The Versailles Fire Department said on its social media that the city will be having fireworks on Monday, July 3.
