Man accused in deadly Moberly crash makes first court appearance after venue change
CARROLLTON, Mo. (KMIZ)
A man charged in a deadly Moberly crash in April pleaded not guilty in his arraignment Tuesday in Carroll County.
Earlier this month a judge granted Steven Garrett a change of venue from Randolph County.
Garrett is charged with two counts of second-degree murder for the death of 22-year-old Maya Stillwell and her unborn child. He is also facing DWI charges and armed criminal action.
Public defender David Kirshner asked the court for Garrett to be released from jail using a GPS monitor so he can attend physical therapy. Kirshnersaid Garrett has injuries not only from the April crash but also from a previous workplace-related injury.
Kirshner argued that Garrett – who was in a wheelchair – does not have access to the correct physical therapy equipment at the jail.
Online court records state that the court found no evidence that any conditions will “secure the safety of the community or other persons.”
Judge Kevin Walden said he is drafting a furlough order to describe if Garrett will be allowed to leave the jail to attend physical therapy.
Garrett will stay in custody at the Randolph County Jail.
