Mid-Missouri experiencing extreme UV levels as conditions stay clear

The Midwest has seen a score of hot and dry days this summer as high pressure systems move overhead. These clear out rain and moisture effectively, even pushing out any cloud cover from the region. As we see more of those bright blue skies, it's important to stay protected while out in the sun.

The UV Index consistently reaches high or very high levels in Mid-Missouri in the summertime; on average, our UV Index climbs up to a 7 (high) or 8 (very high) in the early afternoon. This can mean sunburn in as little as 15-25 minutes while unprotected without sunscreen. On a clear day, this can increase to extreme levels, where sunburn is possible in less than a quarter of an hour.

You should always apply sunscreen any part of the day that you step outside. UV levels already begin increasing by the early morning, and several hours through midday experience high to very high UV radiation. If unprotected, the sun's radiation can cause blisters, sunburn, and long-term effects such as skin cancer and wrinkling. You should try to cover up as much exposed skin as possible with clothing and accessories to reduce UV exposure. Sunglasses that block UV rays, hats, and tight-threaded clothing are all good items that help reduce sun exposure and keep you safer while outdoors in the summer.
