Cardinals get swept by Giants in extra innings
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)
Cardinals relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos was one strike away from snapping the Cardinals' four-game skid in the ninth inning. Instead, with two outs and a 2-2 count, San Francisco's Mike Yastrzemski lifted up a game-tying home run to send the game to extra innings. San Francisco would eventually secure the series sweep, 8-5.
The birds came into Wednesday's game with the club's worst mark of the 2023 season, sitting 14 games below .500. After the loss, the Cardinals are now 15 games below the .500 mark. Skipper Oli Marmol and company are now 27-42 overall and, still, in last place in the central division of the National League.
St. Louis managed to overcome at two-run deficit, early in the game, courtesy of a second inning grand slam from Tommy Edman to take a 4-2 lead. An RBI single from Jordan Walker in the third gave STL the insurance that fans thought would help secure a win.
Things went off the rails in the ninth inning when Gallegos took the hill. He let one, critical hit go, as Yastrzemski tied the ball game up at five runs apiece.
In the 10th inning, Marmol sent Steven Matz out in relief, but that backfired, as well. Matz let two earned runs go on three hits.
Despite the ending, pitcher Jordan Montgomery had a good start on the mound for St. Louis. He threw for a little more than six innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. He also tallied seven strikeouts before Jordan Hicks came in in relief in the sixth inning.
