Eli Drinkwitz promotes defensive position coach to assistant head coach

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mizzou football coach Eli Drinkwitz promoted cornerbacks coach Al Pogue to assistant head coach, on Wednesday. The role was previously held by former offensive line coach Marcus Johnson, who is now a coach at Purdue.

Despite the promotion, Pogue will still serve as the cornerbacks coach in his second season in Columbia, after originally joining the staff in Feb. of 2022.

He brings a veteran's eye to the position, as he has 13 years of expereince coaching at the collegiate level. The 2023 season will be his sixth year in the SEC. Before moving up to college, he also coached 13 years of high school football at three different Alabama schools.

Pogue was a part of Mizzou's much-improved defense in 2022. Under his leadership, standouts like Kris Abrams-Draine and Ennis Rakestraw flourished. The duo combined for 75 tackles, 25 pass breakups and 4.5 tackles for loss.
