Mizzou wins opening round game in Norman Regional; set for meeting with No. 1 Oklahoma
NORMAN, Okla. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou softball team is set for a meeting the No. 1 overall seed on Saturday, after taking down California, 5-1, in the Norman Regional's Opening Round on Friday night.
The Tigers put up a strong offensive and defensive performance in the win against the Bears. MU had eight hits in the outing, including a two-run homer from outfielder Alex Honnold. Honnold finished with the team-high three RBI in the win.
Jenna Laird also had a good night at the dish. She ended a career-best 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI.
Laurin Krings pitched her 10th complete game of the season. She went all seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits and recording three strikeouts.
With the win, head coach Larissa Anderson and company will meet the two-time defending national champions. The No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners and Mizzou will do battle in the first of three games on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The loser of that game will take on the winner of the second game of the day in an elimination game on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that final game on Saturday will take on the winner of the first game.
The Sooners ripped into Hofstra in the opening game of their NCAA Tournament run. The No. 1 seed run ruled Hofstra, 11-0.
