Tracking widely scattered showers and isolated storms for Thursday

TODAY: An approaching warm front brings scattered showers this morning, and will bring us a cool and gray day. Expect widely scattered light rain, through the morning, with a better chance at hearing rumbles of thunder by the afternoon. While just about everyone will see rain at some point today, there will be pockets of dry time here and there between showers. Generally, less than half an inch of rain is expected today, with locally higher amounts from afternoon storms. Temperatures are kept in the 70s thanks to clouds and rainfall.

TONIGHT: From about 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., rain will come to an end from the south to the north, making for a wet evening, but starting us mostly dry Saturday morning.

EXTENDED: Starting warm, in the upper 60s, temperatures will easily reach mid-80s. Dewpoints will also surge south of the warm front that brings us Thursday's rain. This makes for a warm and muggy day, but also will work to create an environment somewhat favorable for thunderstorms. The hiccup in Friday's storm chances though, is that we are missing both lift and shear in the atmosphere. So, in essence, we have few mechanisms in the atmosphere to help trigger storms or sustain them. Still it's possible that we may see storms develop in an isolated manner on Friday, and so we will monitor any that develop for severe potential given an abundance of storm energy. Short lived storms that produce hail and strong winds is about the worst case scenario on Friday. Given the conditional threat of storms, we are not issuing an ABC17 StormTrack Weather Alert Day at this time. Saturday brings better chances for rain, but from non-severe storms. We'll likely be tracking isolated to scattered storms approaching from the west as a weak boundary slides in. It's warm and muggy Friday through Sunday, with temps in the 80s, and plenty of humidity. A better front arrives on Sunday, and will bring widespread rain and eventually cooler air for early next week. Rain on Monday cannot be ruled out yet, but a drier trend kicks off Monday and carries us into the middle of next week, where temperatures settle into the 70s.
