Suspect in fatal Moberly crash still in hospital

MOBERLY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Steven Garrett, the man arrested by Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers following a fatal head-on collision last week in Moberly, has yet to be released from University Hospital.

Garrett was arrested on suspicion of two counts of second-degree murder after the crash left a pregnant 22-year-old Maya Stillwell dead. The second murder charge is for Stillwell's unborn child.

Charges had not been filed Monday morning, according to online court records. He remained hospitalized Monday morning in good condition, an MU Health Care spokesman said.

Stillwell's fiancé, 23-year-old Conar Maylee, was injured in the wreck along with their 2-year-old child.

According to the crash report, Stillwell was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy coroner, while Garrett, Maylee and the child were taken by Randolph County ambulances to University Hospital.

The Randolph County Prosecuting Attorney Stephanie Luntsford said it's a bit of a waiting game right now when asked about the charges she will bring to the table.

"I know that the officers are working very diligently to get that done, and to my office so that we can take a look at it as quickly as possible," Luntsford said.

A spokesman from the hospital said Maylee was released after his injuries were treated last week.

A spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol said driving while intoxicated charges are likely to be filed against Garrett, as well.

Luntsford said when prosecuting DWI cases, she often looks at the accused background trying to make charges stick.

"I will use all of the priors I can find or confirm to enhance them," Luntsford said. "So that's typically something I would do."

Garrett has a history of DWI dating back to convictions in 2005 and 2008. Due to Garrett's previous convictions, he could face a felony DWI charge in this case.
