University of Missouri replaces diversity statement in hiring process

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The University of Missouri is changing some value statements for the school's hiring process.

A letter from UM System President Mun Choi says the school will ask applicants to share their experiences and expertise that show diversity.

The university will no longer use the diversity faculty hiring rubric that was developed in 2018, Choi said in the letter. The statement will replace all the prior requests for diversity, equity and inclusion:

“We value the uniqueness of every individual and strive to ensure each person’s success. Contributions from individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives promote intellectual pluralism and enable us to achieve the excellence that we seek in learning, research and engagement. This commitment makes our university a better place to work, learn and innovate.

In your application materials, please discuss your experiences and expertise that support these values and enrich our missions of teaching, research and engagement.”

Republican state lawmakers have targeted such statements in hiring for higher education.

UM spokesman Christian Basi told ABC 17 in an email that the university regularly reviews its hiring process.
