No. 23 Mizzou softball falls in opening SEC series against No. 16 Kentucky

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The No. 23 Mizzou softball team got shutout in three straight games against No. 16 Kentucky over the weekend, as the Wildcats completed the sweep on Sunday.

MU and UK played in a double-header to wrap up the series on Sunday, due to rain moving through Columbia on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers held up with good defense in the first game of the day, however, the Cats took the lead in the sixth inning and never looked back for a 5-0 win. In that game, junior Chantice Phillips showcased some stellar defense and even robbed Kentucky of a home run in the fourth inning to keep the game scoreless.

Jenna Laird was the main source of offense for Mizzou in that first match up. She went 3-for-3 at the plate, registering three of MU's five hits in the game.

In the second outing of the day, head coach Larissa Anderson and company lost 6-0. Unlike the first game, Kentucky took a quick lead out of the gates, in the first inning.

The Tigers loaded up the bases in four innings, but could never break through. Alex Honnold led the team with two hits in the finale.

Up next - Mizzou will stay home to host Illinois in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 14. First pitch in game number one is slated for 1 p.m.
