Qatar hires coach Carlos Queiroz through the 2026 World Cup

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Qatar has hired coach Carlos Queiroz hoping he will work at his fifth straight World Cup when the 2026 tournament is hosted in North America. The Qatar Football Association says it hired Queiroz until 2026 to lead what is the seventh different national team he has coached. Queiroz took his native Portugal to the 2010 World Cup and then coached Iran at the last three editions. Qatar has never advanced through qualifying to reach a World Cup. As the 2022 World Cup host, Qatar made its tournament debut in November and lost all three group-stage games.
