MSHP: Fewer arrests, fatal accidents over 2020 New Year’s holiday counting period

Missouri State Highway Patrol arrest records from the New Year's holiday counting period show troopers made less arrests and responded to fewer crashes.

Mid-Missouri troopers arrested seven people suspected of driving while intoxicated over the 30-hour counting period. Troop F responded to eight crashes, none of which resulted in fatalities.

Columbia and Jefferson City officers made few arrests over the holiday. Online arrest records show Columbia police officers made two DWI arrests over the same counting period. Jefferson City spokesman Lt. David Williams said officers made no DWI arrests over New Year's.

Across the state, troopers responded to fewer traffic crashes compared to 2019. A report said troopers were dispatched to 72 crashes between Tuesday and Wednesday around Missouri. Over the same counting period last year, troopers responded to 1,301. The 2019 New Year's holiday counting period was also more than three times longer than the 2020 holiday period.

Troopers said there were no traffic fatalities, boating fatalities or drownings reported in the counting period that ended Wednesday.
