JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Jefferson City man accused of assault and other crimes was sentenced to 12 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections last week.

Amadeo D. Gwin, 33, was found guilty by a jury on Nov. 4 for first-degree assault, attempting to disarm a peace officer, two counts of resisting arrest and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was sentenced Thursday, Jan. 19.

ABC 17 News previously reported Gwin wrestled with an officer, causing them to fall to the ground. Gwin reportedly punched the officer several times and tried to take their gun from its holster.

A second officer helped arrest Gwin. The first officer suffered minor injuries and his equipment was damaged. According to the release, this is not the first time the suspect has resisted arrest.

In another case, Gwin is accused of two counts of first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, second-degree domestic assault, third-degree kidnapping, tampering with a victim and violating an order of protection. A hearing in that case is set for 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6 at the Cole County Courthouse.
