Mizzou lands commitment from former Miami quarterback
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A new quarterback is coming to Columbia. Former Miami Hurricanes QB Jake Garcia announced his commitment to the Tigers on Friday afternoon.
The former Top-25 recruit entered the transfer portal on Tuesday and quickly made a decision from there. He redshirted in his first year at Miami, in 2021, and played in eight games in 2022. He finished last season with 803 passing yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions.
Before his collegiate career started up, Garcia moved around quite a bit. He attended five different high schools, spanning from California to Georgia. His family's move to Georgia was to ensure that he would have an opportunity to play, due to the impact COVID-19 had on the 2020 season.
Part of Garcia's high school journey was captured on the Netflix original show, 'Titletown High.'
The California-native will enter a Mizzou quarterback room with a lot of competition. Sophomore Brady Cook started all of 2022, former four-star recruit Sam Horn received quite a bit of attention from fans and another four-star recruit, Washington-native Gabbari Johnson, is also on the roster foe 2023.
It will not be Horn and Garcia's first time meeting each other, though. As first reported by PowerMizzou.com, the two played each other in 2019. Garcia was the quarterback for Grayson High School and Horn played for Collins Hill. Garcia's team beat Horn by 24 points in the 7A State Championship game.
The Tiger quarterbacks will have quite a few weapons to work with in the wide receiver room in 2023. MU will return standouts Luther Burden III, Mookie Cooper and Chance Luper in 2023. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz also added to two big pickups from the transfer portal. Oklahoma-transfer Theo Wease Jr. and Ole Miss-transfer Dannis Jackson both committed to Mizzou in the offseason.
National reports said that Garcia will plan to enroll in the 2023 spring semester at Mizzou.
