Cardinals hire new bench coach, following Matt Holliday’s resignation

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)

A longtime favorite of St. Louis Cardinals fans is no longer with the team. St. Louis Hall of Famer Matt Holliday resigned as the team's bench coach on Thursday. As a result, the club hired longtime White Sox coach Joe McEwing to take over that role.

Holliday had just returned to the club in November, but turned in a letter of resignation just two months later. According to the MLB, he wants to spend more time with his family in Oklahoma.

The 42-year-old is a Cardinals' legend, as he was a seven-time All-Star and helped lead the team to its 2011 World Series.

McEwing is not completely new to the Cardinals organization, though. The former super-utility man played briefly with St. Louis from 1998-99. The 50-year-old spent the last 15 seasons coaching for the Chicago White Sox. He was most recently the club's third base coach, but also served as the bench coach from 2017-20.

This past season, the Cardinals went 93-69 overall. Skipper Oli Marmol and company also won their second NL Central title in the past four years.
