Lake Ozark Fire Protection District adds Cyanokits to paramedic units
LAKE OZARK, Mo. (KMIZ)
Lake Ozark Fire Protection District announced in a Friday press release that Cyanokits to all frontline paramedic units.
Cyanokits are used to prevent cyanide poisoning.
Up to 35% of all fire victims are found to have some levels of cyanide in their bloodstream, the press release stated. These levels can range from the minor/asymptomatic to severe toxicity with unconsciousness or death, if left untreated.
The cause of exposure results from modern homes being better insulated and airtight along with the use of synthetic materials in the home’s furnishings and appliances, the press release stated.
Treatment of smoke inhalation victims, whether civilian or firefighters, with hydroxocobalamin (the primary agent in the Cyanokits) reverses the cyanide’s effect on the human body and allows for it to be excreted through the kidneys.
