William Woods names new Director of Athletics
FULTON, Mo. (KMIZ)
William Woods University announced that Steve Wilson will be the new Director of Athletics for the Owls, starting in 2023. Wilson will take the helm of the department with more than 20 years of experience in collegiate athletics.
He will officially step into the position on Jan. 15, 2023, succeeding Interim Athletics Director Tracy Gastinea.
Prior to accepting the job in Fulton, Wilson served as the A.D. at two different National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic (NAIA) institutions.
"Steve’s impressive background in intercollegiate athletics, which includes experience leading two athletic departments as A.D., work in Sports Information and coaching, makes him an asset to lead our growing athletic department," University President Dr. Jeremy Moreland said in a press release on Monday. "I look forward to WWU athletics thriving as a place for championship teams and student-athletes of character that excel in both the classroom and on the field under his leadership.”
Most recently, Wilson served as the A.D. at Kansas Wesleyan since 2019. In his time in Salina, Kansas the Coyotes won two Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cups. He hired several new coaches and added new sports to the department, including flag football and men's volleyball.
His athletes also had success in the classroom at Kansas Wesleyan, as they posted a department-wide GPA of 3.01.
"I am thrilled to be joining such a strong culture at William Woods University,” Wilson said in a press release. “Throughout the process, the vision that President Moreland and others have for the institution was evident. It's a privilege to lead such a dynamic group of coaches and athletics staff, and I'm excited for the responsibility that comes with continuing momentum. I also look forward to getting my family immersed into such a wonderful community and get to work."
