Missouri State Board of Education to talk about priorities for upcoming legislative session
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
On Tuesday, the Missouri State Board of Education plans to talk about its priorities for the 2023 legislative session.
Among other topics, board members expect to discuss the success of students and workforce development. Board members want to retain more educators in Missouri by pushing for a minimum starting salary of at least $38,000 a year.
The board recommends continued funding to support the Teacher Baseline Salary Grant and Career Ladder program.
Board members also support policies focused on the development of intrapersonal and interpersonal skills for students to help build resilience and employee skills. According to the state board of education, that would allow students to be positive and productive members of society.
Another recommendation is to provide access to opportunities. The state board recommends allowing for voluntary enrollment. That would allow students to attend any public school of their choice despite attendance boundaries.
The state board of education also plans to focus on creating safe and healthy schools, early learning and literacy, and workforce development.
Board members will meet Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in Jefferson City.
