Debris from Wooldridge fire still sits on road one week later

COOPER COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The empty shell of cars and the rubble from homes still lay along the roads in the Village of Wooldridge one week after the major brush fire damaged the town.

"The financial toll that we just took was at least $80,000," said Jessica McComb. McComb was just one of many people from the town of Wooldridge who lost everything in the fire. "Now I have two displaced families that I am really concerned about."

The fire tore through the community of about 60 people Saturday evening, burning more than 3,000 acres. About two dozen buildings suffered severe damage. Officials are investigating whether a combine in a field could have sparked the Cooper County blaze, which was fueled by extremely dry vegetation.

Charred washing machines, sinks and stoves could be seen sitting in the middle of what was once people's homes.

The Wooldridge Baptist Church and the Community Center were two buildings that many feared would be damaged by the fires. Luckily, the damage was not as severe as in other areas of the town.
