JCPD warns people of unethical business practices

The Jefferson City Police Department sent out a news release warning people of unethical businesses, in wake of recent storm damage.

“While this process has largely revealed the resilience and compassion of the people of Jefferson City, unfortunately there will likely be some that will attempt to take advantage of the situation, seeking personal gain at the expense of those most vulnerable,” the news release said.

According to the department, many people will likely seek out businesses to assist in damage repairs in the coming weeks. The department has included the following safety tips:

Demand to see a copy of your service provider’s business license, issued by the City of Jefferson, before entering into any agreement or contract. Inquire whether the service provider has adequate insurance. Insist on the service provider obtaining all applicable permits. Watch out for price gouging. Strongly consider entering into a written contract. Connect with volunteer resources. Use available no-cost resources to assist in the efforts.

Officers said they suggest getting information on legal assistance about Jefferson City ‘s website if residents feel they need it.
