Jefferson City Council to vote on proposed 2023 fiscal year budget

The Jefferson City council plans to vote Monday night on the proposed 2023 fiscal year budget.
City council members are scheduled to meet at city hall at 6 p.m. The proposed budget includes more than $75 million in funds.
Council members met twice in August to go over details about the budget. The main items city leaders talked about were the property tax rate and employee salaries.
At the Aug. 15 meeting, Mayor Carrie Tergin asked that employee raises be included in the budget, Due to inflation, Mayor Tergina emphasized the importance of competitive salaries.
Part of the funds for employee salaries comes from property taxes. The mayor proposed the rate stay the same at 46 cents for $100 of property value going to the general fund.
Ward 3 Councilman Scott Spencer asked to lower the tax rate as a way to be fair to taxpayers. Mayor Tergin shared concerns about who the tax rate proposal would impact.
The councilman later acknowledged this year might not be the best to decrease the rate. At an Aug. 19 meeting, Spencer expressed the city council might not be able to raise the tax rate back to the current amount.
City council members voted to make no changes to the tax rate at the same meeting.
The city council also plans to talk about more demolitions along Capitol Avenue and to make a proclamation against district driving at Monday night's meeting.
