New high school in Jefferson City on track for next year

Work on the new Capital City High School in Jefferson City remains on schedule, a school district spokeswoman said Monday.

The high school is scheduled to open to ninth and 10th grade students for the upcoming school year, while the rest of the project is expected to be done by the end of 2019.

Jefferson City Public Schools spokeswoman Ryan Burns told said the project is on schedule and on budget.

The new high school is located directly across from the new SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in the Highway 179 corridor, which has little business and residential activity.

Remax Jefferson City real estate broker Sharon Keating said the new high school will help the town in multiple ways.

“I think it’s going to be very good for Jefferson City,” Keating said. “We have had a very crowded public high school for a long time, and this will eliminate that problem and give us two different schools to be excited about in sports and drama and everything they do, so it will be good for us.”

Having a good school system makes homebuyers interested, she said.

Keating said she believes the new high school will also attract more businesses to the area.

She said she doesn’t believe there will a large number of residential developments in the area because of the way Jefferson City has experienced growth in the past.

“The growth in Jefferson City is pretty slow, we don’t gain residents much, we don’t have a lot of business coming here other than what supports the state of Missouri,” Keating said.
