Boone County man sentenced in shooting
A Boone County man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for shooting into a home at a family gathering.
Gary Jolley was convicted in February of five felones and two misdemeanors: unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree domestic assault, two counts of armed criminal action, burglary, third-degree domestic assault and second-degree child endangerment.
Judge Kevin Crane sentenced Jolley to 15 years in prison each on the unlawful use of a weapon and burglary charges to run consecutively, according to court records. Jolley received varying prison terms for the other charges, but those terms are concurrent with the two 15-year sentences.
Columbia police arrested Jolley in 2016 after he shot through the back door of his family’s house on Ballenger Lane while 14 people were inside. Prosecutors said Jolley wanted to kill his wife shortly after she separated from him. Assistant Prosecutor Jessica Caldera said his granddaughter wrestled the semi-automatic rifle away from Jolley after he entered the home.
Defense attorneys argued that Jolley suffered from a diminished mental capacity at the time.
