Alzheimer’s Association reminds families and patients about resources available in Mid-Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Alzheimer's Association is reminding Mid-Missourians of the resources available to those diagnosed with the disease.

The reminder comes as the association is set to hold a "Walk to End Alzheimer's" in Jefferson City on Saturday. Organizers held a similar event in Columbia last weekend.

Alzheimer's Association Walk Manager Chris Cottle spoke with Mid-Missourians to remind them they're never alone and can always find help. Cottle said, "The Alzheimer's Association has a 1-800 number that's staffed 24/7 by professionals who are happy to answer. We have offices all around the state of Missouri. Please, please, please, if you need any resources get in contact with us. That's what we're here to do. We're here to help."

A list of resources available to patients and families can be found on the association's website. The resources include information about knowing the signs of the disease, care options, and daily care.

The organization's website also has multiple programs available for those interested. Programs can include support groups, according to Cottle.

The manager said being able to talk with others that are going through the same process can be invaluable.

Cottle said, "Because Alzheimer's is such an isolating disease, when a loved one is diagnosed and you maybe have to quit your job and move back home. It's very isolating, so being able to be in a video call or sit in a room with other people who are going through or have gone through exactly what you're going through and can give you tips on how to care for your loved ones, tips on how to care for yourself. There's really no price on that."

Cottle added that last year there were nearly 1,920 made to the 24/7 help hotline from the Boone County area. Volunteer-led programs also saw success in Boone County.

There are about 120,000 Missourians who deal with Alzheimer's Disease and around 194,000 caregivers, according to Cottle.
