Man fleeing deputies dies after losing control of vehicle

A New Florence man is dead after deputies said his car rolled early Sunday morning while he was fleeing a traffic stop.

Montgomery County deputies said they tried to stop Thomas Penn, 53, for a traffic violation in New Florence around 2:50 a.m.

They said Penn refused to stop and took off at a high rate of speed on Hudson Street.

He continued onto Hudson Road, but deputies said they backed off because there was an excessive amount of dust kicked up by Penn’s car.

When the dust cleared, deputies observed his car rolling and deduced that Penn had lost control of the vehicle.

Authorities tried to do CPR on Penn but they were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead just after 4:00 a.m.

According to the Highway Patrol’s crash report, Penn was ejected from the car.

He was not wearing a seatbelt.
