Stacker compiled data from voter turnout data from the New York Times and statewide political ideology data from Gallup to rank states by their share of self-identifying liberals and then used voter data to identify counties that voted against this statewide average ideology. Data from the Census Bureau, the Pew Research Center, and the Public Religion Research Institute was then used to analyze population demographics on the county level.
