A LaMonte man died late Tuesday in a shootout with law enforcement in Pettis County.

The Pettis County Sheriff's Office identified the man killed by officers as Jay P. Messer, 58.

It started around 6:35 p.m. when troopers and deputies responded to a home near La Monte, according to a news release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

According to a Nixle alert from the Pettis County Sheriff's Office, someone shot at deputies when they arrived at the home to investigate a report of a disturbance. The deputies returned fire and hit and the man, later identified as Messer, who died of their injuries, according to the alert.

Messer was drunk and fired at deputies and a highway patrol trooper with a shotgun, the sheriff's office said Wednesday in a news release. Messer died at the scene and no officers were injured, the sheriff's office said. The release said officers were sent to the scene in the 1600 block of Oak Point Road for a domestic disturbance.

Troop A tweeted about the investigation around 9:45 p.m. The tweet said that troopers were at the scene of the shooting, which involved deputies and a trooper.
