Vehicle catches fire at Gerbes gas pump

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A van caught fire at a pump at a west Columbia gas station Wednesday.

The fire happened at the Gerbes station on West Broadway at about 5 p.m. The van's driver was pumping gas when saw smoke coming from under the hood and the vehicle caught fire, said Columbia Fire Department Assistant Chief Jerry Jenkins.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire and kept it from spreading to the pumps. However, the awning suffered some damage, Jenkins said. A fire marshal is investigating how the fire started.

Three people were in the van but no one was hurt. The gas station remained open.

West Ash Street remained open while the fire was put out.
