COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boone County Planning and Zoning Commission denied a request to rezone land for a MidwayUSA facility between Rocheport and Columbia on Thursday.

Stan Shawver, county director of resource management, said planning and zoning commissioners had concerns the new MidwayUSA headquarters would change the character of the neighborhood and that it could affect property value.

MidwayUSA can appeal the decision. Shawver said the appeal has to be submitted by 5 p.m. Tuesday. If submitted, the Boone County Commission will hear the appeal during its Dec. 3 meeting.

The company proposed to rezone about 193 acres of agriculture land for industrial use. MidwayUSA founder and CEO Larry Potterfield sent letters to neighbors near the proposed facility in August about the company's intention.

MidwayUSA wants to build the new headquarters at the intersection of Highway 40 and Route J.

Potterfield and a MidwayUSA spokesman did not respond to an email inquiry sent late Friday afternoon.
