COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia man has been charged in Boone County in connection with a Fulton teenager’s shooting death last month.

Treyvale Cain-Raybon was charged on Friday with hindering a felony prosecution. Court records show he was arrested and posted a $3,000 bond on Jan. 28.

“Hindering prosecution is usually if you're hiding somebody from being able to be apprehended by the police. But it can be doing other things that keep the police from being able to make a case or solve a murder case, for example,” Boone County Prosecutor Roger Johnson said. “The allegation here would be that he was acting in concert with other individuals and did something that would interrupt or hinder the investigation.”

Court documents indicate that Cain-Raybon suggested -- in an Instagram group chat with other people – that a vehicle Fulton police were searching for should be burned and thrown in a lake.

The Fulton Police Department said on Jan. 29 it had identified juvenile “persons of interest” in the homicide of 17-year-old Mason Sheets. Sheets was found dead on Jan. 19 with gunshot wounds in a vehicle near South Business 54 and Commons Drive.

A 2022 Jeep Compass that was associated with the shooting was found burned on Jan. 23 at Rocky Fork Lakes Conservation Area, just north of Columbia, Fulton police said on Jan. 24.

The probable cause statement in Cain-Raybon’s case say he sent the messages on Instagram on Jan. 22.

Fulton Police Chief Bill Ladwig told ABC 17 News on Friday that he believes the investigation is going well.

“We’re in really good shape for the investigation. But the suspects are all juveniles, so we can’t say anything or release any names,” Ladwig said. “There’s a few more folks that we’re trying to identify, but the main players have been identified.”

Ladwig said multiple agencies are working to locate the suspects.
