Mizzou safety set to return for one more season

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Just as the Mizzou football team touched down in Dallas for the start of Cotton Bowl week, Tiger safety Joseph Charleston announced that he will be returning to CoMo to use his final year of eligibility, in 2024.

It's big news for defensive coordinator Blake Baker and company, who are set to lose a bunch of experience, after MU's bowl game, to graduation. The former Clemson-transfer just wrapped up his second season in the black and gold. He ended the 2023 regular season with a team-high 59 total tackles, one of which was for a loss, as well as a forced fumble, three QB hurries and four pass breakups.

He transferred to MU ahead of the 2022 season, after playing three years at Clemson. He'll be the seasoned veteran in the defensive back room next season, as 2023 was his fifth year playing college football.

In the video he released, announcing his plans, he said, "This year I'll be declaring for...one more year. Let's run it back. M-I-Z! Man, get ready, it's going to be an exciting year," he said. "There's going to be a lot of excitement out there and a lot of tenacity out there."

Charleston and the Tigers will wrap up the 2023 season with a Cotton Bowl meeting versus Ohio State on Friday, Dec. 29. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at AT&T Stadium.
