New MU Women’s Golf Coach introduced to media
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Desiree Reed-Francois has made another hire at Mizzou and on Friday Women's Golf Head Coach Caroline Westrup was introduced to the media.
Westrup comes to Columbia after helping lead Georgia's team to the NCAA Championships last season. She had a nine-year professional career and started her coaching career at the IMG Academy in Florida.
"I played professional golf at a high level and I know I can inspire the next generation and motivate them and make sure that if that's a goal of there's to turn pro, that I can I can make that happen for them," Westrup said.
Westrup also emphasized Friday how important it is for her athletes to stay on top of things in the classroom.
"Professional golf is not for everyone and I want to make sure that I build characters in my players and make sure that they are ready for either turning pro or if it's you know, on the business side that they are ready to step up when they're done here."
She also said her inspiration and love for the game started in Sweden at a very early age.
"I grew up pretty much born on the golf course. My dad coached the Swedish National Team for 10 years. Then, when I was 11, we moved up Norway, and he took over the entire federation as the head coach for Norwegian Federation. I have seen what he's done for players and how thankful they are to him and many have dedicated their careers to him," Westrup added.
