COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A crash on Interstate 70 caused the highway to be closed in a portion of Columbia on Wednesday night.

CPD Sgt. Curtis Perkins told ABC 17 News at the scene that seven vehicles were involved in the crash and two people were brought to an area hospital. At least two semi trucks were involved and the road will be closed for at least two hours.

Three semi-trucks were hauling trailers in the eastbound lane, but when traffic started slowing down, one of the semis didn’t slow down enough and rear-ended another semi, according to CPD crash investigation Lori Simpson. Two vehicles, including a semi, caught fire, Simpson said.

Simpson said the two people who were brought to an area hospital had minor injuries.

Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman Kyle Green told ABC 17 News in an email that the Columbia Police Department responded to an accident that included two vehicles that caught fire and a tractor-trailer carrying propane.

Columbia Fire Department spokeswoman Katherine Rodriguez told ABC 17 News in an email that at least two vehicles had flames showing. A CPD vehicle and other first responders had the road shut down. CPD is urging drivers to avoid the area.

Boone County Joint Communications sent a notification at 7:39 p.m. stating that the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 were shut down at Range Line Street and that traffic was being diverted to Providence Road.

Joint Communications sent another notification at 7:51 p.m. stating that traffic was being diverted to Stadium Boulevard.

The Missouri Department of Transportation Traveler Map showed the eastbound lanes near Stadium Boulevard were closed off. The map states that the closure would last about three-and-a-half hours.

First responders opened the highway near Range Line Street at 10:28 p.m.
