COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri announced on Wednesday it has discontinued its refugee service program, citing federal funding cuts.

In a statement, the organization states that it is transitioning its program to support local refugees to partner agencies by March 31.

In an email to community partners, Executive Director Litz Main said due to a lack of federal funding the resettlement program is ending after 14 years.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending funding to refugee resettlement agencies in January.

"While this marks the close of one chapter, our mission remains strong," Main said in the letter. "We will continue serving our refugee neighbors through other vital programs, including food assistance, disaster relief, and essential family services."

The nonprofit organization says its focus will be on providing charity to those in the Jefferson City Diocese.

Bishop Shawn McKnight said in the release that he appreciates the work Catholic Charities has put in to support refugees in the diocese.

"This work has been a testament to our faith — and our belief in the dignity of every individual," McKnight said in a statement.

Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri offered multiple services in partnership with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, according to its website.

Services included adult education, housing placement, case management and reception and placement.

In 2023 Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri resettled 229 people across mid-Missouri, according to the most recent impact report from the agency.
