JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Missouri's latest jobs report shows a decrease in federal jobs while state and local government positions went up.

The Missouri Economic Research Center's January jobs report, released Friday, says federal government jobs in Missouri decreased by 100 from December to January. Meanwhile, state government jobs increased by over 1,000 in that time frame, and local government positions went up by 300.

Federal job losses have been in the spotlight amid cuts ordered by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency.

Overall, nonfarm jobs in Missouri decreased by 17,200 and the unemployment rate increased to 3.7%. The rate last January was 3.5%.

Columbia's Metropolitan Statistical Area lost 300 jobs in January compared to December, the report says. That's compared to a 1,200-job gain a year ago.
