Fulton first responders rescue woman from storm drain at Westminster College
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
First responders successfully pulled a woman out of a storm drain on the Westminster College campus in Fulton on Tuesday.
The college said on social media Tuesday afternoon that they pulled a person from the city-managed drain on the college's campus. The drain was near the Freshman Quad dormitories, the college said.
A woman in her early 30s was extricated from a storm pipe drain, according to a press release from the Fulton Fire Department. She allegedly had signs of hypothermia and was flown to University Hospital. She was not a student.
According to the release, the woman had been stuck in the pipe for about 18 hours. A student heard her screaming as they were walking by. Crews arrives within five minutes and worked for three hours to get her out, the release states.
It wasn't clear what steps rescuers took to get the person out of the drain but Westminster wrote Tuesday afternoon that "restoration of the area is underway" and asked people to avoid Latshaw Plaza.
Westminster said in an update later Tuesday that the city was working to restore power to the Champ Auditorium and the National Churchill Museum after it was cut off for the rescue.
It wasn't clear how the person got in the drain or how badly they were injured.
