Health experts say the delta coronavirus variant that hit India hard is on its way to becoming the dominant strain in the United States.

Some evidence suggests the variant might cause more severe cases of COVID-19 in people who are not vaccinated. However, the rates of new cases and deaths from the coronavirus remain well below their winter peaks and vaccination numbers keep going up -- albeit slowly.

  1. I’m curious why mutations were renamed variants. Was there a focus group that demonstrated “variants” is more scary than “mutations”?
All viruses mutate, often, and sometimes rapidly. Their mutations are nearly always less dangerous and more contagious. The most successful parasite spreads easily and does NOT maim or kill its host. Killing its host is killing its transmission vector, which means it will NOT spread more easily.
