Columbia utilities director to retire March 14

After 24 years of working for the City of Columbia, Utilities Director Dave Sorrell will retire on March 14, the city announced in a Wednesday press release.

The release says Sorrell was hired as a civil engineer in 2001 and was promoted in 2006 to an engineer in the electric division of Water and Light before going to the water division in 2008. He was promoted to sewer utility manager in 2010 before becoming an engineering manager in the Public Works Department in 2012, the release says.

He was then promoted against to assistant director of utilities in 2015 before becoming utilities director in March 2020.

"It has been a pleasure to serve the customers of the City of Columbia's utility divisions for over two decades. I have witnessed many changes for the City during this time and I am proud to have participated in many," Sorrell said in the release. "All projects and operational challenges are unique. The staff are what makes the City function, and it is amazing what they can accomplish. I will miss the people more than anything."
