A Mokane man died Friday when he drowned in the Missouri River in northwest Missouri.

Benjamin Hirner, 30, drowned while trying to retrieve a boat that had gone adrift in Atchison County, near the Nebraska border, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

The News Channel Nebraska website reported Hirner had been with several duck hunters at a boat loading ramp when the incident happened. Another man was pulled from the river a short distance downstream and was treated for hypothermia, the website reported.

Hirner was pronounced dead at a Nebraska hospital, the patrol said.
