COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri Department of Transportation reports construction began Monday on the new Sorrels Overpass.

The Sorrels Overpass was damaged on Oct. 18 after the overpass was damaged by a truck that crashed into the bottom of the bridge.

The Missouri Department of Transportation had been planning to rebuild the Sorrels Overpass in 2022 but the timeline was moved up due to the October wreck.

Demolition crews began tearing down the Sorrels Overpass on Nov. 5.

The driver of the truck that hit the bridge, a 51-year-old Boonville man, suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Officials warn drivers that occasional lane closures are possible in both directions of I-70 during the work, which is scheduled to wrap up by late May.

The contracted cost of the new overpass is $1,038,857.
