St. Charles man dead after standoff in Callaway County

KMIZ

Deputies and troopers attempted to save a man who threatened them with a knife on Saturday.

A 57-year-old St. Charles man was held-up in a vehicle in the 8000 block of County Road 234, south of Calwood, when deputies arrived around 8:30 a.m. for reports of suspicious activity.

When deputies approached, the man displayed a "large butcher knife in a threatening manner," according to the Callaway County Sheriff's Office.

Hours later, around 11:20 a.m., deputies saw signs that the man was hurting himself purposefully. Deputies overtook the man, who was still holding the butcher knife, and found that he had a critical self-inflicted wound.

Deputies performed life-saving measures, according to the release, and Callaway County EMS transported the man to Fulton Medical Center. He died around 12:25 p.m., deputies say.

The man's identity has not been released pending notification of next-of-kin. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
