North Callaway R-1 superintendent keeps job, but could be terminated for a second offense

The superintendent of a Mid-Missouri school district could be relieved of his duty if he commits another offense.

In May 2012, Dr. Bryan Thomsen, superintendent of the North Callaway R-1 School District, was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

He pleaded guilty to the charge this summer and was placed on two years of unsupervised probation.

According to the School Board, Thomsen informed the then-board president about the incident, but the remainder of the board did not know about the situation until Aug. 30, 2013.

After meeting Tuesday, the board released a statement Thursday:

“While Superintendent Thomsen has demonstrated a significant lack of judgment, one mistake does not define a person, nor does it erase the strong positive accomplishments of the past five years.”

The board says members voted unanimously to place a letter in Thomsen’s file and notify him his employment with the district will be terminated if there is another incident.

When ABC 17 News contacted Thomsen earlier this week, he released the following statement:

“In May of 2012 I made a terrible error in judgement and want to apologize to everyone for my actions. I take full responsibility for my actions and have fulfilled all obligations set forth by the state. I am truly sorry for any negative attention this incident has brought upon my family and the district.”
