JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Residents will have an opportunity to weigh in on a proposed expansion of the Jefferson City landfill.

Republic Services has requested an expansion that would add approximately 15 acres to its landfill at 5605 Moreau River Access Road.

The expansion area would be used for several types of waste, including construction and demolition debris, tires and concrete.

The landfill opened in the 1970s and encompasses more than 500 acres in east Jefferson City. This expansion project has been in the works for about three years.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold a public hearing on the proposed expansion at 6 p.m. Wednesday at 1730 E. Elm St. in Jefferson City.

DNR reviews landfill expansion applications to ensure disposal areas are properly designed and constructed and meet environmental requirements.

Residents may comment at the hearing or submit written comments to communications@dnr.mo.gov by Nov. 11.
